Missing 3-Year-Old Boy Found Dead, Swept Downstream In River In Westchester

A missing 3-year-old boy was found dead in the Mamaroneck River on Thursday, Feb. 27, after apparently falling in and drowning, authorities said.

According to the Village of Mamaroneck Police Department, officers learned of a missing child who had left his home earlier that day at around 2:30 p.m. on Thursday. His 54-year-old uncle and 85-year-old grandfather searched for him but could not find him.

Police officers and detectives then searched the area and eventually found the child in the Mamaroneck River near the Hillside Avenue Bridge. Officers removed the boy from the water, but he was pronounced dead at the scene by Mamaroneck EMS.

The Westchester County Medical Examiner’s Office responded and took possession of the body.

Through their investigation, authorities discovered that the child left his home around 12:12 p.m. with his dog and went toward the Mamaroneck River near 1st Street, about two blocks from his residence.

Police believe the child, named as 3-year-old Zaire Alberick by his family members, may have fallen into the river and was carried downstream by the current.

The Westchester County District Attorney’s Office has been notified and is assisting in the ongoing investigation.

Following Zaire's death, his family has created a GoFundMe page to ask for help in funding his funeral costs.

According to the family, Zaire's mother, Derly Dorval, had recently moved to Mamaroneck to start a new life following her securing a new job at Glenn Island Nursing Home in New Rochelle as a CNA.

"Both she and Zaire's father, Zanetti Alberick, are devastated. Derly is currently hospitalized due to her grief of losing her only son," the family wrote on the GoFundMe page.

As of Friday evening, Feb. 28, the fundraiser had collected $3,160 in donations out of a $30,000 goal.
